The best part: Students at the University of Erfurt, University of Applied Sciences and HMU can use the Germany Semester Ticket that comes with their tuition fees to explore not only Erfurt, but also the whole of Thuringia and Germany on local transport.

A real highlight is Wartburg Castle in Eisenach — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an impressive history. For nature lovers, a hike through the Hainich National Park with its famous treetop path is well worthwhile – it's even suitable for those otherwise afraid of heights!.
Fancy a whole lot of history? Then off to Weimar! The city of poets and thinkers boasts Goethe, Schiller and plenty of culture. It may sound dry, but it's definitely not. Gotha with its magnificent Friedenstein Palace is also just around the corner.
And if you're looking for a little more action: The Hohenfelden reservoir offers great swimming and water sports opportunities in summer — or you can relax in the Avenida thermal spa.
